BlackBerry Link v1.2.0.28 now available for Windows

*UPDATE* - Full change log can now be viewed here as a PDF file.

Although we saw an early version of BlackBerry Link 1.2 arrive unofficially, folks waiting for the official release can now go ahead and grab it from the BlackBerry website directly or through the BlackBerry Link update system. Sadly, it seems as though the Mac release hasn't yet been made available so this one is strictly for Windows users though the good news is, it's a later revision than what has leaked previously. At this point, there isn't a readily available change log to go through but just as with previous releases, the UI has been updated and overall a lot of general improvements have been added.

It has been a while since the last BlackBerry Link update and certainly, some folks would say another has been long over due. No matter though as today brings just that. New versions of the desktop application have been released for both PC and Mac and while the noted changes are just 'general performance improvements', the PC release is now at v1.2.1.31 while the Mac release is at v1.1.1.39. At this point, I assume everyone has been having issues with BlackBerry Link at one point or another so, go ahead and grab the latest releases and we'll see if they fair any better.

Still having issues with BlackBerry Link working properly on Windows or Mac? You're not alone, I assure you. That said though, new versions of BlackBerry Link have made their way to the BlackBerry downloads page so I suppose now is a good a time as any to test them out and see how they run compared to previous releases.

You'll find the Windows app sitting at v1.2.2.13 while the Mac app has now risen to v1.2.0.17. We're not sure as to what all has changed as of yet but if you get them downloaded and up and running then give us a shout in the comments if you spot anything new. One thing that is known though is that on the Mac version at least, it's sporting a fancy new UI.

We suggest downloading them directly because it might take a while for them to show up under the auto updates.

If you've signed up for the BlackBerry Beta Zone and are participating in the BlackBerry Link beta then chances are good you've already seen the latest survey asking what changes customers want to see in BlackBerry Link future releases. However, if you're not part of that program, then you may have missed the hints of things BlackBerry is looking to add. The survey sent out lists things already integrated into BlackBerry Link but then asks what new and existing features should be added.

It has been a few months since we've seen an update for BlackBerry Link, and today Windows users get a shiny new version (sorry, no Mac love today). We're not totally sure just what's new in this one, but you can expect some minor tweaks and fixes to keep things running decent. It doesn't look like there are any big overhauls this time around, but it's always good to keep things up to date.

Although the chances of the Heartbleed bug being exploited through BlackBerry Link was minimal, the desktop app for Windows and Mac had until yesterday remained on BlackBerry's vulnerable list. The good news though, if you were worried about it is that new versions that patch the exploit are now available for download as confirmed by BerryReview.

New BlackBerry Link update for Mac and Windows now available

We've been waiting to post this all day because the url to the Mac version was broken but now that that has been fixed, we can finally let you all know BlackBerry Link has been updated. On Windows, BlackBerry Link has been updated to v1.2.3.56 while on Mac it has been updated to v1.2.1.18.

Unfortunately, BlackBerry pushed this one out with a standard change log for v1.2 which simply says it has an updated, more user-friendly look and feel, support for additional languages and general performance improvements. So, with that said if you spot anything that's actually new let us know because the change log it's using is just recycled.

*UPDATE* - The Windows and Mac updates are both now available for download at the BlackBerry Link site

For the past few weeks now, we've been hearing BlackBerry Link was soon to be updated with contact and sync improvements on Windows and Mac and it looks as though BlackBerry is in the process of updating the desktop app through their site right now, as there has been weird things going on for the past little while. At first, it showed v1.1.1.16 for Mac was available but the file suddenly went missing. Now when you go visit, the site has reverted back to v1.1.1.13 and the BlackBerry Link file is still missing, almost as if they went to release an update but then decided to roll it back but had deleted the previous version and now need to re-upload it again.

In any case, you can grab the download right now thanks to @Berryfornoobs who managed to catch the download when it was live. At this point though, we can't really tell if it was meant to be in the hands of users, so if you're trying this one you're doing so at your own risk and we're not sure what all has changed other than the fact that if your device is running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later, you can now sync contacts between your device and your computer. You can grab this one or wait for the proper version to show up on the BlackBerry download page. Windows users, there an update coming for you as well.

BlackBerry Link

BlackBerry Desktop Manager has been the staple PC app for backing up, restoring, updating and synching BlackBerry devices for years, however with BlackBerry 10 a refreshed version dubbed BlackBerry Link looks to be taking its place. BlackBerry Link will have many of the same features of the current BlackBerry Desktop Software but has been built for the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices (though we're assuming it will be compatible with older devices as well). With the new software, users will easily be able to sync music, videos, photos and documents as well as backup/restore device data, update device software and more. BlackBerry Link will also allow users to access files stored on a computer from their device.

More BlackBerry Link information appears in latest BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha update

BlackBerry Link

For a while now, we've been hearing about the BlackBerry Desktop Manager replacement that will be coming with BlackBerry 10 called BlackBerry Link. We've seen some shots of it here and there but now, the latest Dev Alpha update pushed out is showing signs of it as well. As you can see in the images, BlackBerry Link even tries to install when the Dev Alpha is connected to the computer. There is bits and pieces of info throughout the files such as:

BlackBerry Link 1.0 supports new mobile-enabled BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. With the BlackBerry Link 1.0, you can create a backup file that was created while using the BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows, restore your BlackBerry smartphone or tablet. When syncing contacts the BlackBerry Desktop Software also maps groups from your Apple Address Book to a category with the same name in the Contacts application on your smartphone. For more information, see http://www.blackberry.com/desktop/docs/.

[This particular file isn't in English so I used Google Translate to see what it says]

It will go so far as to offer to install updated drivers and quit there. If you poke around a bit though, you can find the set up file needed and run it. However, BlackBerry Link won't fully download and install because the webpage for it isn't quite live yet or it's based off an internal RIM server. Either way, it adds just a little bit more confirmation to its eventual arrival.

BlackBerry Link will be the BlackBerry Desktop Software replacement for BlackBerry 10. We've seen some images and features in the past, but some more leaked shots have surfaced that show off more of the new software. From the looks of things BlackBerry Link will have a much better UI than the previous software and allow you to transfer files to and from your device, browse files and perform restore/backup and other device functions. It should be fairly full-featured and will be a welcome upgrade from previous versions. Check out some more images below.

Although BlackBerry Link will prompt you to install it when you first connect your BlackBerry 10 device to your PC or Mac, if you're among those who also like to have the installable file directly that's no problem. You can now head on over to the BlackBerry website and download the full desktop installer so that you have easy access to it whenever you may need it.

We'll have more how-to articles related to BlackBerry Link soon but in the meantime, BlackBerry has also included a great tutorial video that's certainly worth watching if you're looking to learn more now and in case you're wondering, BlackBerry Link supports BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry 10 OS and BlackBerry PlayBook tablets running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1.

BlackBerry Link - Where's the beef?

BlackBerry Link

The BlackBerry Desktop Software (aka BlackBerry Desktop Manager) wasn't always the most reliable utility, but it did offer a ton of options that were extremely helpful in various situations. You could sync up your data with Outlook or other PC apps, sync files, backup & restore a device and much more. You could even get deep down into clearing out certain databases or performing a selective restore when tinkering (ie. clearing out just your calendar entries and restoring them from a backup).

If you picked up a BlackBerry Z10 or plan to grab a BlackBerry Q10, you may fire up BlackBerry Link and wonder just what gives. Playing around with Link for the last week or so, I've noticed that there are plenty of these features that have seem to gone missing in action. So it left me wondering, where's the beef?

Outlook via USB sync coming to BlackBerry Link

If there has been a topic on the minds of BlackBerry Z10 owners that needs highlighting, it's the fact that the newly introduced BlackBerry Link which replaces BlackBerry Desktop Software for BlackBerry 10 devices, currently lacks the functionality to sync Outlook via USB.

Sure, there are ways to get it working similarly assuming you have an Outlook.com webmail account but that's not ideal and not what previous owners had access to. Previous BlackBerry owners want their desktop Outlook sync via USB and many, are wondering why the hell it was removed in the first place.

Luckily, BlackBerry has now commented on the matter and desktop synch via USB will be making its way to BlackBerry Link via an update that will include the ability to import contact and calendar information directly from Outlook to your BlackBerry 10 smartphone and another update shortly after that will bring full two-way sync.

As we noted just yesterday, BlackBerry has plans to update BlackBerry Link in the coming weeks with Outlook contact and calendar information via USB sync but for now there is a few other issues to address as well. As such, a new BlackBerry Link update is currently rolling out to Windows and Mac OS users. The update brings BlackBerry Link into v1.0.0.94 on Mac and v1.0.0.76 on Windows and should resolve issues folks were seeing when transferring data from a previous BlackBerry smartphone to a new BlackBerry Z10, as well as adding in the capability to reload your OS.

BlackBerry Link

It's a safe practice to backup your BlackBerry 10 device once in a while just in case you have some kind of issue and have to start fresh. Thankfully BlackBerry Link makes the process easy and you can easily backup to your Mac or PC with very little effort. BlackBerry Link isn't as robust as the old BlackBerry Desktop Software, so you do lose some advanced functions like selective backup and restore, but it still gets the job done. Keep reading to find out how to backup and restore your BlackBerry 10 device using BlackBerry Link.

BlackBerry Link for Windows updated to v1.0.1.11

Good news for Windows users - BlackBerry Link for Windows has received a small update that brings one-way sync as well as some other tweaks and fixes. The new version allows Windows users to sync contact and calendar data from Outlook on a PC to a BlackBerry 10 device, but sadly not from the device to the PC. It's a step in the right direction but certainly leaves Outlook users wanting more. Thankfully two-way sync is expected down the road.

Some various fixes and UI tweaks included in this build as well. Head to the link below to grab the latest version.
