The latest update to BlackBerry Link for Mac is now available to download

If you're a Mac user, you've likely been wondering where your update to BlackBerry Link has been given the Windows version was updated a while ago now. Wonder no more though, as a new version is now appearing as available for download and brings with it everything that was addressed in the Windows update as well. Sitting at v1.0.1.6, here's what has been added to the change log:

  • You can import your Address Book contacts to your BlackBerry 10 smartphones. This import is a one-way transfer of data from your computer to your device. Local contacts won’t remain synced if you choose to import this data again the next time that you connect your BlackBerry 10 device to your computer.
  • Updates have been made to the user interface for in-progress operations.
  • Updates have been made to the process for setting up new devices in BlackBerry Link.
  • Album view is available within Content view.

It's still not the update that Outlook users are looking for but it's an update with some welcome improvements and that can certainly be appreciated. If you're not making use of BlackBerry Link already, you can download it directly from the BlackBerry website and run the update from within the app. If you've already got BlackBerry Link installed, the update should be showing as available now.

BlackBerry Link updated for Windows and Mac - Brings sync enhancements and remote file access

Today BlackBerry Link has received another update for both Windows and Mac. The new version includes some small tweaks and fixes to get things in line with BlackBerry OS 10.1. Sadly there is still no two-way sync for Outlook as many were hoping however.

BlackBerry Link v1.1 allows you to remotely view and download files on your computer using your BlackBerry 10 device. You can sync and share media files, such as music and photos, between your BlackBerry 10 devices and computer. You can also switch from a previous BlackBerry device, backup your data, update your device software and more!

This brings the Windows version up to 1.1.0.33 and the Mac version to 1.1.0.28.

If you fire up BlackBerry Link you should see the update available or you can just go download it on your own.

BlackBerry Link for Mac and Windows updated with bugfixes

If you've been having some issues with BlackBerry Link for the past few days like I have, you'll want to go ahead and check for updates. A new version is rolling out through the auto update process and new versions have been posted to the BlackBerry Website as well for download. The Mac version gets bumped into 1.1.0.32 while the Windows version will see a jump to 1.1.0.37.

The updates don't really bring a full change log with them as they simply show the same change log as the previous release, so it's a bit hard to say what's been fixed up aside from saying bugfixes. I can note though that BlackBerry Link is no longer hanging for me after several reboots, this was the problem I was seeing the past few days, so there's that. Spot anything else? Drop a note in the comments and let others know.

Brainstorming BB10: Are you using BlackBerry Link, and if so, is it up to snuff?

BlackBerry Link is new but is it good?

Before the release of BlackBerry 10 we learned early on BlackBerry would also be revamping their desktop offerings and replacing BlackBerry Desktop Software. The new app was to be called BlackBerry Link and would come with a revamped UI and was meant to be more user friendly than the aging BlackBerry Desktop Software solution, as well it was built to offer some additional features like remote desktop.

When it arrived folks were quick to notice it lacking some of the more advanced options that were previously offered. Advanced options that made the experience a whole lot better and for some, were essential to their usage of BlackBerry smartphones. BlackBerry Desktop Software was by no means perfect. It was horrendously slow at times and was often hit or miss on just what exactly it was doing but it had things people liked and used all the time.

To its credit, BlackBerry has updated BlackBerry Link several times now and has promised that a lot of the missing features will return. Number one on that list is the USB sync with Outlook for contacts and calendar appointments, which has caused a lot of folks some grief with it currently being missing. Still, like BlackBerry Desktop Software, it's often times slow and makes you wonder if it's doing what it's actually saying it's doing. Honestly, I avoid using it and I don't seem to be the only one.

*UPDATE* - The Windows and Mac updates are both now available for download at the BlackBerry Link site

For the past few weeks now, we've been hearing BlackBerry Link was soon to be updated with contact and sync improvements on Windows and Mac and it looks as though BlackBerry is in the process of updating the desktop app through their site right now, as there has been weird things going on for the past little while. At first, it showed v1.1.1.16 for Mac was available but the file suddenly went missing. Now when you go visit, the site has reverted back to v1.1.1.13 and the BlackBerry Link file is still missing, almost as if they went to release an update but then decided to roll it back but had deleted the previous version and now need to re-upload it again.

In any case, you can grab the download right now thanks to @Berryfornoobs who managed to catch the download when it was live. At this point though, we can't really tell if it was meant to be in the hands of users, so if you're trying this one you're doing so at your own risk and we're not sure what all has changed other than the fact that if your device is running BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1 or later, you can now sync contacts between your device and your computer. You can grab this one or wait for the proper version to show up on the BlackBerry download page. Windows users, there an update coming for you as well.

BlackBerry Link for Windows and Mac updated with contact sync improvements

Well, that didn't take long. Just as we posted up the Mac download, the official versions went live on the BlackBerry Link download page. The Windows version is currently showing as v1.1.1.26 while the Mac version shows as v1.1.1.13 and both updates include improvements for contact syncing between your device and your computer when running BlackBerry OS 10.1 or later.

With that having been said, there aren't a whole lot of options to choose from should you opt to sync your contacts, but for basic transferring, all the components are there as far as I can tell. Power users will likely end up wanting more but at least the updates are still rolling out and BlackBerry Link is gradually improving. If you happen to spot any other changes, let us know in the comments.

First Look: BlackBerry Link v1.2

Ahh, yes. BlackBerry Link. By now, most BlackBerry 10 users are fully aware that BlackBerry Link isn't exactly the best desktop software app in the world. We've griped enough about it in the past that it's really not worth harping on any more really. Perhaps, everyone complaining about it has caused BlackBerry to put a little more effort into it. After all, it has seen a few updates since initial release and is slowly improving.

Next on the horizon is BlackBerry Link 1.2, which we've heard about a few times before now and is noted to bring several improvements to the app such as faster and more reliable back-ups, better synch offerings and more options for when it comes to restoring your device. Additionally, there is also fixes for remote access and logging in via your BlackBerry ID. Overall lots of general improvements to make using the app better.

Leaked BlackBerry Link v1.2 for Windows

We've already got a close look at BlackBerry Link 1.2 in some screenshots earlier but as of now the update hasn't started to roll out of Waterloo for whatever reason. No matter though, if you're on Windows based computer and want to give it a go, you can now grab the leaked version. Sorry Mac users, you're in the dark here.

Overall, you'll see some visual improvements to the app as well, faster and more reliable back-ups, better synch offerings and more options for when it comes to restoring your device. Additionally, there is also fixes for remote access and logging in via your BlackBerry ID.

Like all leaks, you're downloading this one at your own risk. There is no promise here that all things will work as expected and really, you'll want to use caution when using it. If for whatever reason you find this version isn't working the best for you then it is suggested you revert to the official release.

*UPDATE* - Full change log can now be viewed here as a PDF file.

Although we saw an early version of BlackBerry Link 1.2 arrive unofficially, folks waiting for the official release can now go ahead and grab it from the BlackBerry website directly or through the BlackBerry Link update system. Sadly, it seems as though the Mac release hasn't yet been made available so this one is strictly for Windows users though the good news is, it's a later revision than what has leaked previously. At this point, there isn't a readily available change log to go through but just as with previous releases, the UI has been updated and overall a lot of general improvements have been added.

It has been a while since the last BlackBerry Link update and certainly, some folks would say another has been long over due. No matter though as today brings just that. New versions of the desktop application have been released for both PC and Mac and while the noted changes are just 'general performance improvements', the PC release is now at v1.2.1.31 while the Mac release is at v1.1.1.39. At this point, I assume everyone has been having issues with BlackBerry Link at one point or another so, go ahead and grab the latest releases and we'll see if they fair any better.

Still having issues with BlackBerry Link working properly on Windows or Mac? You're not alone, I assure you. That said though, new versions of BlackBerry Link have made their way to the BlackBerry downloads page so I suppose now is a good a time as any to test them out and see how they run compared to previous releases.

You'll find the Windows app sitting at v1.2.2.13 while the Mac app has now risen to v1.2.0.17. We're not sure as to what all has changed as of yet but if you get them downloaded and up and running then give us a shout in the comments if you spot anything new. One thing that is known though is that on the Mac version at least, it's sporting a fancy new UI.

We suggest downloading them directly because it might take a while for them to show up under the auto updates.

New BlackBerry Link update for Mac and Windows now available

We've been waiting to post this all day because the url to the Mac version was broken but now that that has been fixed, we can finally let you all know BlackBerry Link has been updated. On Windows, BlackBerry Link has been updated to v1.2.3.56 while on Mac it has been updated to v1.2.1.18.

Unfortunately, BlackBerry pushed this one out with a standard change log for v1.2 which simply says it has an updated, more user-friendly look and feel, support for additional languages and general performance improvements. So, with that said if you spot anything that's actually new let us know because the change log it's using is just recycled.
